Data Issues

Where did my data go?

It is probably not "lost" just temporarily "misplaced".

As of version 1.111 we started to use a new folder to store user data, "MySnapPlusData". The latest "Sample farm" database is located in SnapPlus\MySnapPlusData\farmTables. The old default location for user data was SnapPlus\data\WI and if you have been using Snap-Plus since before July 2005 your data may be located there; perhaps in SnapPlus\data\WI\farmTables.

Snap-Plus usually remembers the location of the current database you are working on. If something goes wrong and it "forgets" this location it will look for data in SnapPlus\MySnapPlusData. If your data is actually somewhere else, you won't see it. Instead you will see the default "Sample farm".

If this sounds familiar, try using File/Open on the main menu to look for your missing database. Double-click on the Snap-Plus folder and check for a "data" folder. If you see a "data" folder, select it then select "WI". You will probably see several folders including "farmTables". Select "farmTables" and check if your latest changes are there (check all the farms, there may be multiple farms in one Snap-Plus database).

If your data isn't in "farmTables", it may be in a different folder under "WI". If you used "Create Snap-Plus database" prior to version 1.111 the suggested location would have been SnapPlus\data\WI\farmTable.mm.dd.yy where mm, dd and yy are the month, day and year you created the database. Folders "climateData" "cropData" "farmTables.empty" "miscData" and "soilsData" were Snap-Plus system files and should be ignored. Anything else you see was added later and may contain user data.

If you do have data in this old location, you should consider moving it to "MySnapPlusData". This will allow you to delete the old SnapPlus\data folder entirely. It will also make backing up your data easier. In fact, you should make sure you have all data backed up before deleting anything!

There is another place where data is often misplaced, and that is in the "MySnapPlusData" folder itself. Snap-Plus versions prior to 1.117 allowed users to accidentally create a database there when they thought they were creating it in a folder inside MySnapPlusData. The program no longer allows this, but if you can't find what you're looking for, it is another place to check.
